MIDI file guidelines

Let's get to work as a community on guidelines for making MIDI files that are widely-compatible and convenient for people to edit.

My only initial thoughts are that submissions be quantized (having things adjusted to be exactly on the beats and exactly standard durations). It also occurred to me that we should all use General MIDI (GM) so that our files are easy to interchange and play reasonably for most other Villagers. ( See Guidelines).
